Urban Legends
I'm really fascinated but annoyed by Urban Legends, which have proliferated
at an alarming rate as email has become a common thing and people have
learned that with one long CC: list you can share anything with everyone
you know in just a few seconds. We had such a problem with ULs being
shared at work (as truth, of course) that I wrote a short step by step
explanation of how to spot a UL.
If you heard a story that's too good to be true, it's probably
an Urban Legend. Read all about them at the AFU
& Urban Legends Archive
Likewise, that Virus warning email you got is probably as truthful
as the request for bids on a bridge in Brooklyn. Find out more at
the Computer
Virus Myths page.
Viri aren't the only kind of Internet-related hoax. Read about
others, like the elusive Internet Tax at CIAC
Internet Hoaxes.
Other Folklore
The Louisiana
Folklife Center is where I got my start. I haven't worked there
since '96, but they're still dear to me.
The Archives
of Folklore-L, a listserv mailing group, is full of fascinating
stuff, plus my own boring comments. That's because I never shut
up, even when I should.
